Taste of Ashes
-solo exhibition at Cornell University,
Olive Tjaden Hall up until October 8th.
I will be giving a lecture, October 7th at 5pm, in the African Studies Department, Cornell University, on printmaking, Robert Blackburn, the Printmaking Workshop and contemporary print publishing. Robert Blackburn was one of the most important figures in printmaking and played a major role in the development of the printmaking renaissance of the 60′s and 70′s. His pioneering work as an artist and printer dramatically influenced the creative lives of countless artists, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Robert Motherwell, Romare Bearden, and Elizabeth Catlett to name a few of thousands. His work directly influenced me as an artist and his collaborative print work inspired me to pursue the craft of collaborative printmaking. As the Director/ Master Printer of Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, former ULAE Master Printer, and Tamarind Institute alumni I have worked at all of the institutions credited for the printmaking renaissance. There are many missing pieces to the story, namely the contributions of artists of color, missing from the generally accepted story of the time. I will augment the history of the printmaking renaissance, as well as highlight the current activities of Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop. I will bring prints to show at the close of the talk.
Taste of Ashes is an exhibition inspired by Cormac McCarthy’s novel Blood Meridian. It is a collection of cyanotypes, typewriter and soot drawings, silkscreens and sculpture. The exhibition opens with two steel sculptures, Black Nun #1, #3. They derive their name and form from the nautical buoy used to mark the most dangerous, left side, the devil’s side of a channel. It is here, at the edge of death that a sailor chooses the name of his salvation, the black nun. It is here that the elemental aspects of our mythology are superstitiously clung to, destroyed, or writ anew. Taste of Ashes is a reflection and investigation of the horrific and beautiful potential in humanity and our tragic repetition of lessons unlearned.
